Flo’s Legacy:
Flo left £15,000, with the wish that the capital be invested and the interest used to send long-standing leaders, who needed a holiday but couldn’t afford one, to a World Centre. Despite legal advice and changing the scope of the funding to support leaders going on international trips, the money remained unspent. By 2024, the fund had grown to around £19,000, sitting in a savings account and not benefiting anyone. Flo likely intended her gift to be used over the years, not left unused for 25 years. This example highlights the importance of having minimal restrictions on gifts to ensure they can support Girlguiding North West England members in the short term.
Margaret’s Contribution:
Margaret left 5% of her residuary estate to her local campsite for maintenance and upkeep. The £28,000 received had no usage restrictions, allowing the local campsite committee to consult members on its use. Some funds were used for essential maintenance during the COVID-19 period, while the remainder upgraded facilities and waived site fees for local units during evening meetings. The flexible wording in Margaret’s Will allowed the money to be spent effectively, helping local guiding cope with unexpected events like COVID-19.
Samia’s Gift:
Samia left £11,000 in her Will for ‘Capital’ items. The need at the time was to fund fun activities and workshops for young people, and leader training, but due to the tangible spending requirement the funds had to be spent on an outdoor classroom. Whilst this is a great asset, it will need additional funding for upkeep in the future.
Chris’s Support:
Chris left a sum of money for local guiding, with the family expressing a wish that it be used to support girls undertaking an international trip selected through a Region selection process. After negotiation, it was agreed that funds could support any young person attending an international trip needing financial help. This means that a young person who couldn’t afford to go on a unit, district, division, county or region international trip due to family circumstances can request financial support and have an amazing experience with their peers.
