A Stitch in Time - Leaders' Arts Event

Open / 10am - 16.30pm / Gawthorpe Hall, Burnley Road, Padiham, Burnley, BB12 8UA

Conserve, Curate, Create

Visit the North West’s own Downton Abbey, Gawthorpe Hall, and discover new skills to inspire you and your unit!

This unique day is all about giving volunteers an insight into different ways to create with the girls in your unit. In addition to the rare opportunity to take part in workshops in forest skills and curation, you will have the opportunity to ‘meet’ the famous Miss Rachel Shuttleworth who lived at Gawthorpe Hall.

Miss Shuttleworth was one of the founder members of Girlguiding and is renowned for designing the National Standard. She inspired many girls and their leaders and this day will hopefully give you lots of new ideas and will inspire you to work on new projects like Arts Award, or other areas of the programme.

Workshops

All Participants will have the opportunity to take part in all four workshops through out the day:
1. Join artist Serena Partridge to explore her commission celebrating the life of Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth and be inspired to create your own miniature pieces in this interactive workshop.

2.Learn about the conservation and care of historic collections. With a trained Conservator, learn how museum objects are cleaned and cared for using a range of specialist cleaning materials. You will even have the opportunity to try your hand at cleaning some specially chosen items from the Hall’s collection.

3.Take a look around the Hall, see the exhibition about Miss Rachel’s life and meet ‘Miss Rachel’. who will talk about life growing up at Gawthorpe Hall and her work with Girlguiding.

4. Take part in a Forest School activity led by a National Trust Ranger. Construct a shelter, prepare a fire site, collect wood, prepare and eat popcorn. Instruction and discussion on running your own forest school will be held throughout the session.
