Two members from 2nd Whalley Guide Unit have been recognised for their commitment to their local community during the Boxing day floods last year. They have been awarded the brand new President’s Award, which recognises our young members who have gone above and beyond to help others.
Grace Macdonald and Olivia Hurst helped and supported those affected by floods in their village last year. On Boxing day 2015 the River Calder burst its banks and over 250 homes were affected with properties left in devastation and families displaced over the festive period.
Grace and Olivia gave up their Christmas break to support those in need at the village hall. They, along with other volunteers provided and organised donations, refreshments and evening meals over the week.
Their local Division Commissioner, Hazel Dalton, said : “I’m so proud of the girls for giving up their own time to help others. Having been a victim of the flooding, it was comforting and heart-warming to have local residents and Girlguiding members rallying round to support us. In the initial aftermath, when it was very difficult to see beyond the mess, it was heartening to have two smiley faces in their guiding uniform bring hot soup and sandwiches to me and others affected by the floods.”
Grace, a member of 2nd Whalley Guide Unit said: “Last year I was overwhelmed by how much damage had happened, but I was happy that I could help my community. The award has come as a complete shock to me and I can’t believe that myself and Olivia are the first members ever to receive it.”
Grace and Olivia are the first two recipients of the President’s Award which recognises young members who have shown great initiative and determination. Both girls were presented with a specially-designed brooch in honour of their inspirational efforts by Suzie Reynolds, Girlguiding North West England’s Region President. The Region Chief Commissioner, Julie Bell also attended the ceremony held at the Lions Club Community Coffee Morning and commended the girls for their achievements.
More information about how you can nominate an inspirational young member will be released shortly.
